The Apostrophe

What's in a Name?

In the fall of 2009, our Restaurant was named 'The Apostrophe'. The decision to segregate the Restaurant was to give it its own identity, to raise awareness within Lewes and beyond, thus furthering its ability to gain recognition for the culinary excellence provided by Head Chef Nick Miles and his team.

This process seems to have been justified, when in August 2010, The Apostrophe was awarded its first Rosette by the AA for high standards of food preparation under the stewardship of Head Chef Nick Miles.

'The Apostrophe' is a linguistic pun relating to the restoration of The Shelleys to its original name in 2007, whereby the lack of an apostrophe in the name was noted on several occasions by the surrounding community. This is characterised by a poem written by Geoff Bird, a guest and friend of The Shelleys, in November 2007:

"Attempts to be contemporary, have led to a catastrophe
Did those involved just fail to see, the need for an apostrophe?
Being oblivious to the grammar, has led linguistic dons to clamour
For a review of the outcome, taken much too far by some
Carrying placards for all too see, which say "Bring back apostrophe"
I won't enter this debate, but I am very pleased to state
This Hotel offers quality, with or without apostrophe!"
